4 Great Ways to Protect Your Family and Your Home

Your family and your home are your life, and you want to do everything you can to protect them. While you can’t prevent every bad thing, there are steps you can take to reduce unnecessary risks at home, such as those listed below.

Video Security System

A video security system is one great way to protect all that you love. In addition to capturing any unwanted guests on your property, you can monitor your home from a distance. You can check in visually to make sure everyone is safe and set up alerts so you’ll be notified if a door is left opened or unlocked. You can also view live camera footage and take advantage of motion sensors. You can even connect your lights, locks, thermostats, and more.

Use Motion Lights and Timers – And Consider a Dog

Most burglars look for specific things when they are choosing homes to break into. They prefer homes with no lights, no dogs, and no cameras. Having these three things greatly reduces your chances of being burgled.

Motion lights are a great option, as they’ll turn on when there is movement in the vicinity. Not only will this potentially scare off burglars, but it will also let you know if anything or anyone is around your house.

You can also get lights that you can put on a timer. It’s a good idea to vary what time those lights come on, though, as a smart burglar might watch long enough to realize your lights are on a timer.

A dog is also a good idea. If you choose to get one, though, consider sending it to be trained. That way, it can be a pet while still working to guard your home and your family.

Fire and Disaster Safety Plan

There are many people who are injured or killed due to a lack of knowledge. If a fire were to break out, a burglar was to break in, or a natural disaster headed your way, would your family know what to do? One of the best ways to keep them safe is to develop a plan for each situation – as well as a backup plan – and practice them until everyone’s eyes have glazed over. The steps should be second nature so that they don’t have to think about what to do.

Secure Entrances

There’s a really good chance that you lock your main entrance every time you leave, but there may still be some entrances that you don’t think about. Most people don’t think about locking a door that’s behind another door, and burglars know this. If you have a garage, for instance, you might not think about locking the door inside the garage that leads into your home. Start making it a habit to lock and check all doors and windows for extra security.
